In a blow to cross-border synthetic drug cartels, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) intercepted a massive quantity of Yaba tablets sent to India from Myanmar and arrested two alleged traffickers who are resident of Manipur. The drugs are estimated to be worth Rs 50 crores in the international market.“WY” methamphetamine refers to Yaba, a highly addictive combination of methamphetamine and caffeine pressed into pills. The tablets are usually orange or green and are frequently stamped with the letters “WY”.“They typically contain a mixture of methamphetamine, caffeine, and binders. The term “Yaba” comes from the Thai word for “crazy medicine.” The ‘WY’ stamp is widely associated with illicit production networks in the Golden Triangle region of Southeast Asia, particularly Myanmar,” a senior officer said.
Acting on intelligence inputs, NCB smeuths intercepted two suspicious trucks in Guwahati.
“Because it combines a potent central nervous system stimulant with caffeine, it causes intense stimulation, followed by a severe crash, addiction, and significant long-term physical and mental health risks,” the official added. The breakthrough comes as part of a wider, intensified crackdown on narcotics trafficking across the North Eastern region. Acting on intelligence inputs, NCB smeuths intercepted two suspicious trucks in Guwahati.A search of the vehicles uncovered specially fabricated concealed cavities cleverly built inside the fuel tanks — a sophisticated method designed to evade law enforcement checkpoints. Officers recovered the massive consignment of methamphetamine on the spot. Both arrested suspects are residents of Bishnupur, Manipur.Preliminary investigation revealed that the multi-crore drug consignment originated from Myanmar. The NCB is aggressively pursuing the wider network to identify international suppliers, domestic receivers, financiers, transporters, and other handlers to dismantle the entire supply chain from source to destination. The agency said the operation continues and it is committed to dismantling drug networks, tracking financial trails, and fulfilling the national vision of a Nasha Mukt Bharat (Drugs-Free India).Emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach, the NCB said its operational strategy extends far beyond individual seizures, prioritizing the destruction of financial and logistical syndicates.“To combat the organized nature of these cartels, NCB Guwahati zone is maintaining coordinated intelligence-sharing with state police, the Anti-Narcotics Task Forces (ANTF), Assam Rifles, BSF, CRPF, SSB, Customs, DRI, NIA, and the Enforcement Directorate (ED),” an officer said.
