Diwali cleaning tips: How to remove dust, stains and odours from mattresses, pillows and cushions at home

With Diwali on November 8, the annual clean-up is in full swing, and guests will soon be sitting on your sofa cushions and sleeping on your beds. Mattresses, pillows and cushions are easy to forget, yet they collect dust, sweat, oil, spills and odours all year round. The good news is that you do not need special equipment or harsh chemicals. A vacuum cleaner, baking soda, mild detergent and a sunny afternoon can bring them back to life. Here is a simple five-step guide to cleaning them at home before the festival.

Start with the care labels and a good airing

Before you clean anything, check the care label. Mattresses, memory foam, feather pillows and decorative cushions with embroidery or beads all need different care. Take off covers, sheets and pillowcases, and wash them in hot or warm water if the label allows. Then carry the mattress, pillows and cushions to a sunny, airy spot, or prop them up near an open window. Sunlight and fresh air help freshen fabrics and reduce damp smells. Two to three hours in the sun is usually enough.

Vacuum away dust and mites

Dust and dead skin settle deep in the fabric, which is why a simple vacuum makes such a difference. Use the upholstery attachment and go over the whole mattress, including the seams, edges and underside, then the pillows and cushions. Move slowly and press lightly so the suction can reach into the folds. Do the same for the sofa seams and the spaces behind the cushions. Regular vacuuming every month or two keeps dust build-up low and helps people with dust allergies.

Lift stains gently

Treat stains early, and always blot rather than rub, since rubbing pushes the stain deeper. For fresh liquid spills, press a clean, dry cloth on the spot to soak up the moisture. For sweat, oil or food marks, mix a little mild detergent with water, dab it on with a cloth and blot with a clean damp cloth. A paste of baking soda and a few drops of water also helps lift marks on mattresses and cushions, left on for 15 to 20 minutes before vacuuming off. Avoid soaking the mattress or foam, since trapped moisture can lead to mould.

Freshen with baking soda

Baking soda absorbs odours, which makes it ideal for mattresses, pillows and cushions that smell stale. Sprinkle a thin, even layer over the surface and leave it for at least an hour, or a few hours if the smell is strong. Then vacuum it up thoroughly. For a fresher scent, you can add a few drops of an essential oil to the baking soda before sprinkling, but test a small hidden spot first, and keep it away from children and pets. Do not use vinegar and bleach together, and avoid strong chemicals on mattresses.

Dry fully and protect for the future

Everything must be completely dry before it goes back on the bed or sofa. Damp fabric attracts mould and smells, so give each item enough time in the sun or a well-ventilated room, and turn it over halfway. Once dry, put on fresh covers, and consider a washable mattress protector and pillow protectors for future protection. Wash pillowcases and bedsheets weekly, air your mattress every few months, and turn or rotate it if the manufacturer recommends it. A little regular care means less effort before the next Diwali.
